Among the deadliest cancers worldwide, Lung cancer hits one of the top places. This uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells in the lungs often leads to life threatening complications. However, understanding its symptoms, risk factors and treatment options can aid in early detection and better management.
Lung cancer can be mostly classified into two main types:
- Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): One of the most common types of lung cancer, NSCLC accounts for about 80-85% of the global cases. Some of its sub categories include adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma.
- Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC): Mostly linked to smoking, SCLC is a type of lung cancer found in about 15% of the cases worldwide, that is deadly and an aggressive form that spreads rapidly.

In general, early stage lung cancers might not show noticeable symptoms, however, as it progresses, people may experience:
- Continuous cough, which can worsen over time, including coughing blood
- Frequent chest pain and discomfort
- Unexplained breathlessness
- Weightloss
- Fatigue and weakness
- Recurring respiratory infections.
Multiple risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing lung cancer, like:
- One of the major factors, smoking tobacco is deadly and can lead to lung cancer.
- Passive smoking or exposure to second hand smoke can also be linked to lung cancer.
- Exposure to Radon Gas that naturally accumulates in homes and buildings.
- Exposure to asbestos and other chemical exposure, generally in industrial or construction areas.
- Long term exposure to polluted air can also lead to lung cancer.
Treatment of lung cancer depends on the type. However, some of treatment options may include:
- Surgery, where a part or all of the affected lung is removed.
- Radiation Therapy, where targeted radiation is used to destroy cancer cells.
- Chemotherapy: A non-invasive form where drug treatment is used to kill or slow the cancer cells.
- Targeted Therapy, where focus is given on specific genetic mutations in cancer cells.
