Early Signs of Lung Cancer
One of the potentially most deadly forms of cancer worldwide, lung cancer can show easy to dismiss symptoms or can be quite subtle. Though early detection can significantly help in increasing the chances of successful treatment, recognizing warning signs can help in making informed decisions.

Common Early Symptoms
Lung cancer, generally do not cause noticeable symptoms during the early stages, however, with growth, few early signs that may appear are:
- Persistent cough
- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Hoarseness
- Unexplained weightloss
- Fatigue
- Frequent lung infections
As in an earlier article we had discussed, multiple factors can be responsible for the growth of lung cancer (like smoking, exposure to radon gas, asbestos and other chemical exposure especially in industrial areas, long term exposure to polluted air etc), smoking accounts for the majority of the cases. Apart from this, genetics also plays a significant role in some individuals with a family history of lung or other cancers.
People Who might be at risk of Lung Cancer
Lung cancer can affect anyone. However, as said, Smoking accounts for the majority of lung cancer cases worldwide. Apart from this, individuals exposed to asbestos, radon gas, or industrial chemicals, people with family history of lung cancer, and people with chronic lung disease like COPD are at a higher risk of getting lung cancer.
When to See a Doctor?
Remember, if you experience any of the above symptoms for over a week or a couple, it’s crucial you see your doctor or an oncologist immediately. It’s foolishness to wait and see the symptoms get severe. Early detection, early intervention can make a life saving difference.
Your doctor might suggest X-rays or CT scan or a sputum test to check for any abnormalities. If required, your doctor may also suggest a biopsy.
