Genetic Testing for Breast Cancer

Among the most common cancers affecting women globally, Breast cancer ranks one. And nearly 10% of the cases are  hereditary, mostly linked to mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Though genetic testing can help in identifying mutations, is it the right choice for everyone?

A genetic test is one which examines your DNA to identify abnormalities, mutations etc that increases your risk of developing certain cancers.  While newer panels also do test for mutations in genes like  PALB2, TP53, & CHEK2, the most common and known are the BRCA1 & BRCA2 mutations.

Benefits of genetic testing for Breast Cancer

Diseases like cancer do not inform you before they come, however, when you are aware of hereditary breast cancers, getting tested can help you and your healthcare professional make informed decisions. In general, if you test positive for a mutation, you can go for enhanced screening, better lifestyle choices, take preventive medicines, or even risk-reducing surgeries.

Risks associated with genetic testing

There is no particular risk associated with genetic testing, however, testing positive with breast cancer can bring in unwanted stress and anxiety. Genetic counselling on the other hand is suggested, before and after testing to fully understand every possible option.

Remember, genetic testing is not necessary for all, however, for those with a family history or other risk factors, it is an important tool. If you are unsure about your family history, talk to your doctor or visit Dr. Ranajit kar, Senior Radiation Oncologist and HOD at Panda Cancer hospital for a test. Understanding genetic risk is not about fear, rather, it helps in planning for your future and helps make informed decisions.
